Bush Calls for Broader Military Disaster Response Role 16 Sep 2005 The
military will have a broader role in disaster response, based on
aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Dictator Bush said in a nationally televised
address Sept. 15.

night, no more than an hour after the President departed, the lights
went out. The entire area was plunged into total darkness again, to
audible groans. It's enough to make some of the folks here who witnessed
it... jump to certain conclusions. It is impossible to over-emphasize the
extent to which this area is under government occupation, and portions
of it under government-enforced lockdown. Police cars rule the streets.
They (along with Humvees, ambulances, fire apparatus, FEMA trucks and
all official-looking SUVs) are generally not stopped at checkpoints and
roadblocks. All other vehicles are subject to long lines and snap
judgments and must PROVE they have vital business inside the vast roped-off
regions here."
Doctor says FEMA ordered him to stop treating hurricane victims 16 Sep
2005 In the midst of administering chest compressions to a dying woman
several days after Hurricane Katrina struck, Dr. Mark N. Perlmutter was
ordered to stop by a federal official because he wasn't registered with
the Federal Emergency Management Agency. "I begged him to let me
continue," said Perlmutter, who left his home and practice as an orthopedic
surgeon in Pennsylvania to come to Louisiana and volunteer to care for
hurricane victims. "People were dying, and I was the only doctor on the
tarmac (at the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport) where
scores of nonresponsive patients lay on stretchers. Two patients died
in front of me."
Katrina aid from Cuba? No thanks, says U.S. 14 Sep 2005 In separate
Washington press briefings, both the White House and State Department
spokesmen this week downplayed the Cuban government's offer to send some
1,600 medics, field hospitals and 83 tons of medical supplies to ease the
humanitarian disaster. State Department spokesman Sean McCormack

needed since there has been a "robust response from the American medical

Not the New Deal By Paul Krugman 16 Sep 2005 "It's a given that the
Bush administration, which tried to turn Iraq into a laboratory for
conservative economic policies, will try the same thing on the Gulf Coast.
The Heritage Foundation, which has surely been helping Karl Rove develop
the administration's recovery plan, has already published a manifesto
on post-Katrina policy. It calls for waivers on environmental rules, the
elimination of capital gains taxes and the private ownership of public
school buildings in the disaster areas... There's every reason to
believe the reconstruction of the Gulf Coast, like the failed reconstruction
of Iraq, will be deeply marred by cronyism and corruption."
